A new food destination has opened in Baltimore. The new R. House “is a launch pad for Baltimore’s most exciting chefs.” And don’t worry, there’s plenty for vegans to enjoy!

I visited R. House very briefly right before the holidays. I haven’t yet been back but I absolutely cannot wait. This European-style food court offers space for 10 different food experiences—one of which is vegetarian! Here’s my quick overview of what’s available:

Veg-Friendly? Very—a vegetarian eatery. I’ve only tried the cauliflower so far, but it was so delicious (and this is coming from someone who loathes eating cauliflower!). I’ve heard their cheesesteak is great as well!

From the R. House Site: Chef Mel’s take on old-world vegetarian street food, elevating vegetables from the side dish to the main dish. Featuring locally-sourced vegetarian dishes, a fresh juice bar, and small-batch provisions, cultivated by farmers of the future, Urban Pastoral.

From the R. House Site: Meaning “four” in Arabic, ARBA will serve modern Mediterranean street food. The menu will feature classics like house-made falafel, shawarma and hummus, alongside creative Middle Eastern fare like grilled octopus salad, kefta kabob rolls and eggplant fries.

Veg-Friendly? Yes. They offer a special Vegano Venezolano (vegan arepas) which is fantastic!!

From the R. House Site: White Envelope will feature a modern style of arepas, a Venezuelan comfort food. These crisp cornbread pockets are stuffed with combinations of meat and vegetables, such as The Illustrious Pig, with slow-roasted pork leg, lime mayo, fresh tomato and arugula or Paint in Black, with beef cooked in caramel sauce and spicy plantain puree. Federico will also serve caratos, a traditional drink made by cooking down tropical fruit with cinnamon and spices.

Amano Taco | Chef Claudia Santillàn

Veg-Friendly? They have a vegetarian Rajas taco or Rajas bowl, both of which are veganizeable if the cilantro aioli is replaced. I’ve tried the jalapeno salsa which is vegan, despite looking and tasting creamy due to being cooked with onions, garlic, and oil!

From the R. House Site: Claudia Santillàn is bringing an authentic taste of Mexico to R. House. Featuring slow roasted meats and variety of raw, roasted or grilled chiles, Amano Taco will offer made-to-order tacos and bowls alongside housemade Totopos and salsa. Amano Taco will also serve Frescas and Horchata for a refreshing lift.

Ground & Griddled | Chef Dave Sherman (of Cafe Cito in Hampden)

7AM-3PM, COFFEE UNTIL 7PM

Veg-Friendly? The focus is on eggs. This establishment is vegetarian-friendly, but not vegan-friendly. Coffee, maybe?

From the R. House Site:  Ground & Griddled will serve up made-to-order egg sandwiches and coffees from espresso to nitro cold brew. The egg-a-licious spot will also serve unique lunch sandwiches and weekend brunch

BeBim | Chefs Heather Chung & Unmi Kim

Veg-Friendly? They have two tofu options—smoked and spicy—for their bowls. The bowls come with 5 ingredients of your choice (the cucumber kimchi is delicious) and you can select from 5 sauces. The spicy mayo is the only sauce that’s not vegan, according to the gal behind the counter. As for the Mandu dumplings, it’s not clear if the spinach and kale would be vegan.

From the R. House Site: This sister duo is bringing Korean BBQ to R. House. They’ll be grilling smoky meats and vegetables to fill buckwheat wraps, rice bowls and salads, plus serving house-made short rib dumplings for an incredible all-day snack.

House.
